PROGRAMS FAQ

Have questions about St. Paul Lutheran School? You're in the right place. Here are the answers to the questions families ask most often about our programs.

What Grades Does St. Paul Lutheran School Serve?

St. Paul offers a full preschool through eighth grade program. Our preschool serves children ages 3 and 4, and our K–8 program carries students all the way through middle school. Many of our families start in preschool and stay with us through eighth grade graduation.

What Does the Curriculum Look Like?

St. Paul's curriculum meets all Michigan state requirements across every grade level. Learning is academically rigorous, hands-on, and delivered within a Christian atmosphere where faith is woven naturally into every subject. Students don't just memorize facts — they're encouraged to think critically, ask questions, and engage with the material in meaningful ways.

Each grade level has dedicated, credentialed teachers who bring both professional expertise and genuine Christian care to the classroom. Explore our grade-level pages to see what the curriculum looks like at each stage.

How Large Are the Classes?

St. Paul's classes average 10 to 12 students. That's one of our most significant strengths. Teachers have the time and space to know each child individually, provide personalized instruction, and step in early when a student needs extra support or is ready to be challenged further. No one gets lost here.

Do You Need to Be Lutheran or a Church Member to Enroll?

Not at all. While St. Paul is rooted in the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod and our faith is central to everything we do, our doors are open to families of all backgrounds. What unites our school community is a shared desire for an education that takes both academics and faith seriously. Families from many different faith traditions and backgrounds have found a home at St. Paul.

What Subjects Do Students Study?

Students at St. Paul receive a well-rounded education across all core subject areas:

  • Religion: Bible study, worship, catechism, salvation history, and memory work
  • Language Arts: Reading, phonics, spelling, handwriting, literature, and creative writing
  • Mathematics: Number concepts, geometry, measurement, the metric system, and algebra
  • Science: General science, health, and hands-on STEM learning experiences
  • Social Studies: Geography, Michigan history, current events, and civics
  • Fine Arts: Music, art, choir, drama, and band
  • Physical Education: Individual and team sports, fitness skills, and recreation
Is Faith Integrated Into the Curriculum?

Yes, and intentionally so. Faith isn't a separate class that students attend and then set aside. It's woven into every subject and every part of the school day. A science lesson is an opportunity to marvel at creation. A history class is a conversation about God's hand in the world. Teachers bring their Christian faith naturally into the classroom, and students grow academically and spiritually at the same time.

Does St. Paul Have a Dress Code?

Yes. St. Paul uses a dress code to help students focus on learning and build a sense of community within the school. Download the full Dress Code Policy for complete details.

Is Extended Care Available?

Yes. St. Paul offers extended care for families who need it before and after the school day. Morning care begins at 7:00 AM and after-school care runs until 6:00 PM. Extended care is available in a safe, familiar, faith-filled environment staffed by people your child already knows.

What Technology Do Students Use?

Technology is introduced intentionally and progressively at St. Paul. Students in grades 1 through 4 receive focused instruction in responsible and effective Chromebook use. By the upper grades, technology is a natural tool students use confidently for research, writing, and independent learning. Our approach ensures students develop real digital literacy skills without technology replacing the hands-on, relationship-centered learning that defines a St. Paul education.

Does St. Paul Have a Music Program?

Yes, and it's one of our standout offerings. Under the direction of Minister of Music Mr. Greg Paul, students have access to a rich variety of musical experiences throughout their time at St. Paul:

  • General Music: All students in kindergarten through grade 4 participate weekly
  • Beginning Band: Open to students starting in grade 5
  • Advanced Band: For students ready to take their musical skills further
  • St. Paul School Choir: All students participate, practicing twice weekly and performing at worship services and community events
  • Handbell Choir: An after-school ensemble open to interested students
  • Select Choir: An auditioned after-school choir focused on music reading, part singing, and choral festivals
What Athletic Opportunities Are Available?

St. Paul partners with St. Mary in Royal Oak to provide after-school athletic opportunities for students. We also offer after-school clubs including Cross Country Club. These activities give students meaningful ways to stay active, build friendships, and develop character outside of the classroom. Learn more about athletics at St. Paul
