ELEMENTARY

Elementary students at St. Paul

St. Paul Lutheran School has been part of Royal Oak for over 100 years. Our elementary program gives children in grades 1 through 5 a strong academic foundation, a close-knit community, and a faith-centered environment where they are known, encouraged, and challenged to grow.

A Place Where Every Child Is Known by Name

At St. Paul, small class sizes are not a limitation; they are one of our greatest strengths. With an average of 10 to 12 students per class, your child will never get lost in the crowd. Teachers have the time and space to understand how each student learns, step in early when extra support is needed, and celebrate individual progress in ways that larger schools simply cannot.

This is the kind of environment where confidence is built, curiosity is encouraged, and every child has a genuine relationship with their teacher.

What Your Child Will Learn

Our curriculum meets all Michigan state standards, with faith woven naturally into every subject area. Elementary students at St. Paul study:

  • Religion: Bible study, salvation history, catechism, worship, and memory work
  • Language Arts: Reading, phonics, spelling, handwriting, literature, and creative writing
  • Mathematics: Number concepts, geometry, measurement, the metric system, and foundational algebra
  • Science: General science, health, and hands-on experimentation
  • Social Studies: Geography, Michigan history, current events, and civics
  • Fine Arts: Music, art, choir, and drama
  • Physical Education: Team and individual sports, fitness skills, and recreation
  • Spanish: Spanish is offered to students as an additional language opportunity.

Every subject is taught by dedicated teachers who bring both professional expertise and genuine Christian care to the classroom.

Hands-On Learning and Technology

Learning at St. Paul goes beyond the textbook. Our science curriculum is built around hands-on experimentation, giving students real STEM learning experiences through direct observation, questioning, and discovery. These experiences lay the foundation for critical thinking skills that carry forward through every grade.

Technology is introduced intentionally and progressively. Students in grades 1 through 4 receive focused instruction in how to use devices like Chromebooks responsibly and effectively. By the time they reach the upper grades, technology is a natural tool they use with confidence for research, writing, and independent learning.

Life Beyond the Classroom

A St. Paul education extends well past the school day. Students have access to a range of activities that help them explore their interests, build friendships, and develop skills outside of core academics.

Music

Led by Minister of Music Mr. Greg Paul, students in grades 1 through 4 participate in general music class each week. All students take part in the St. Paul School Choir, performing at worship services and community events throughout the year. Visit our Music & Arts page for more.

After-School Clubs

Students have access to after-school clubs and activities that let them explore their individual interests, build friendships, and develop skills outside of core academics. Learn more.

Athletics

Through our partnership with St. Mary in Royal Oak, students have access to after-school sports opportunities such as basketball, volleyball, track, baseball, and softball. Read more details on athletics offerings here.

Tuition and Financial Support

We believe a high-quality Christian education should be accessible to families who are seeking it. Financial aid is available for qualifying families, with applications opening each mid-spring and allocations communicated by late May or early June. Families with more than one child enrolled also receive a sibling tuition discount, and several payment plan options are available to fit different budgets.

View tuition rates, learn more about financial aid options, or contact us with any questions.

See St. Paul for Yourself

The best way to understand what makes St. Paul different is to walk through our doors. We would love to show you our classrooms, introduce you to our teachers, and answer any questions your family has.
