Middle School (Grades 6–8)

The middle school years are pivotal. Academically, socially, and spiritually, grades 6 through 8 shape the kind of person a student becomes. At St. Paul Lutheran School, we take that seriously. Our middle school program gives students the academic preparation they need for high school alongside a faith-grounded community that helps them navigate one of life's most important seasons.

Small Classes at a Big Moment

Middle school is exactly when students most need to feel known, supported, and challenged by adults who genuinely care about them. St. Paul's small class sizes make that possible in a way that larger schools simply can't replicate.

10–12 Students Per Class
4 Expert Subject Teachers
3 Years of Middle School

Teachers know each student individually. They notice when someone is disengaged, struggling, or ready to be pushed further. That kind of attentiveness doesn't happen by accident. It's built into the structure of how St. Paul works.

A Rigorous, Faith-Centered Curriculum

St. Paul's middle school is taught by a dedicated team of experienced educators, each bringing deep expertise to their subject areas alongside a genuine Christian faith.

  • Mr. Chris Francik (Principal) — Middle School Math
  • Mr. Kurt Schmidt — Grammar, Spelling, Religion, and Band
  • Miss Julie Thomas — Language Arts and Social Studies
  • Mr. Greg Paul — Science and All-School Music

Together, they deliver a curriculum that meets all Michigan state requirements while keeping faith at the center of every subject.

  • Religion: Bible study, catechism, salvation history, worship, and memory work
  • Language Arts: Grammar, spelling, literature, practical and creative writing
  • Mathematics: Algebra, geometry, measurement, and advanced number concepts
  • Science: General science with hands-on STEM learning experiences
  • Social Studies: World and U.S. history, geography, Michigan history, and current events
  • Fine Arts: Music, art, choir, drama, and band
  • Physical Education: Individual and team sports, fitness skills, and recreation
  • Spanish: Spanish is offered to students as an additional language opportunity.

Music, Band, and the Arts

St. Paul's music program is one of the most robust offerings in the school, and middle school is where it truly opens up. Under the direction of Minister of Music Mr. Greg Paul, students in grades 5 through 8 have access to a range of musical opportunities.

Beginning Band

Open to students starting in grade 5.

Advanced Band

For students ready to take their skills further.

Handbell Choir

An after-school ensemble that performs at worship services and special occasions.

Select Choir

An auditioned after-school choir emphasizing music reading, part singing, and choral festivals.

St. Paul School Choir

All students participate, practicing twice weekly and performing at church services and community events throughout the year.

Whether your child is a seasoned musician or just beginning to explore their musical interests, there's a place for them here.

Athletics and Activities

St. Paul partners with St. Mary in Royal Oak to provide after-school athletic opportunities for middle school students. From team sports to individual activities, students have meaningful ways to stay active, build friendships, and develop character outside the classroom.

Additional after-school clubs, including Cross Country Club, give students more ways to explore their interests and talents.

Ready for High School

A St. Paul eighth grader doesn't just finish middle school — they finish prepared. Graduates go on to Lutheran High Northwest and other area high schools with strong academic foundations, developed study habits, and a faith identity that has been carefully nurtured over years.

The transition out of St. Paul is something our teachers think about intentionally. By eighth grade, students are writing, reasoning, and engaging their faith at a level that sets them apart.

Tuition and Financial Support

A high-quality Christian education should be within reach for families who are seeking it. Financial aid is available for qualifying families, sibling discounts apply for households with more than one enrolled student, and flexible payment plans are available.
